TLS & SRTP Explained

Understand the roles of TLS for SIP signaling and SRTP for protected media transport.

PROTOCOL MAP

Signaling, policy and media are different layers.

Seeing the layers together makes it easier to diagnose security, routing and audio problems correctly.

NO PUBLIC INTERNET REQUIRED

Private LAN / isolated IP network

Local phones, a local IP PBX, Mediatrix gateways and Sentinel can exchange SIP calls entirely inside the organization. The voice path can remain on a private LAN, VLAN, campus network or isolated operational network.

OPTIONAL FOR EXTERNAL SERVICES

SIP carrier, PSTN, Teams or cloud

An external connection is used only when calls must reach public numbers, remote sites or hosted services. If the required call path is entirely local, the system can stay on the private network.

Example shown on a private LANSIP signaling and RTP media can remain entirely inside the organization. No public Internet connection is required for this internal call.

Calling endpoint

IP phone, Teams client or application starts the session.

Policy boundary

Keeps signaling, security and media behavior visible between domains.

PBX / cloud platform

Call control finds the destination and applies calling features.

Receiving endpoint

Rings, answers and exchanges media with the caller.

  1. 01
    TLS protects SIP signaling
  2. 02
SIP / SDP negotiates the media
  3. 03
    SRTP protects voice packets
  4. 04
Keys and certificates need lifecycle ownership
  5. 05
    Logs confirm the negotiated result
READING THE DIAGRAM

Signaling security and media security are separate

SIP signaling
Creates, changes and ends the session. It carries identities, routes, capabilities and responses—not the conversation audio.
RTP media
Carries packets of encoded voice after the session has been negotiated.
TLS
Protects SIP signaling on a supported hop or connection.
SRTP
Protects the media stream and must be negotiated and verified separately.

Simplified protocol model — actual flows depend on topology, NAT, codecs and negotiated security.

LAYER COMPARISON

Know which layer you are troubleshooting.

A successful SIP response does not guarantee audio, and encrypted signaling does not automatically mean encrypted media.

Troubleshooting should correlate signaling, media and network evidence for the same call and timestamp.
