TLS vs SRTP | Secure VoIP Explained | M5 Technologies & Mediatrix
M5 Technologies & Mediatrix VoIP Security

TLS vs SRTP: What protects your VoIP network?

TLS and SRTP work together to secure enterprise voice. TLS protects SIP signalling. SRTP protects the actual voice conversation.

M5 Technologies and Mediatrix help enterprises, operators and critical infrastructure teams understand where each protocol fits, why both matter, and how Sentinel SBCs and Mediatrix gateways can enforce secure voice communications.

TLS Protects SIP signalling: registration, authentication, call setup, routing and session control.

SRTP Protects the voice media stream: the audio packets carrying the real conversation.

Simple Explanation

TLS and SRTP do not secure the same part of a VoIP call.

In SIP communications, a call has two major layers: signalling and media. M5 Technologies and Mediatrix design secure voice architectures that address both layers.

T

TLS protects SIP signalling

TLS encrypts the SIP messages used to register users, authenticate devices, set up calls, change routes and terminate sessions.

S

SRTP protects voice media

SRTP encrypts the RTP stream that carries the voice audio between phones, gateways, SBCs, PBXs and cloud voice services.

M5

M5 Technologies connects both

M5 Technologies and Mediatrix help apply TLS and SRTP through SBCs, gateways and secure SIP infrastructure.

Why Customers Need This

Without TLS and SRTP, VoIP can be exposed.

Many organizations modernize voice by connecting SIP trunks, Microsoft Teams, PBXs, hosted UC platforms and remote users. Without proper encryption and border control, they may expose sensitive call setup data, internal network information and voice conversations.

  • SIP messages may reveal users, domains and routing information.
  • Unencrypted media streams can create privacy and compliance risks.
  • Improper protocol handling can create interoperability failures.
  • SBC enforcement helps keep policy consistent across providers.
Protocol
What It Secures
Why It Matters
TLS
SIP signalling, registration, authentication and call setup.
Prevents exposed SIP messages and supports secure voice-edge control.
SRTP
RTP voice media carrying the audio conversation.
Helps protect confidentiality of voice traffic across IP networks.
SBC
Policy enforcement between networks, carriers and platforms.
Controls TLS/SRTP behaviour, normalization and secure interconnection.
Mediatrix Security Architecture

Where M5 Technologies and Mediatrix fit.

TLS and SRTP are protocols. They still need the right infrastructure to enforce them correctly across SIP trunks, Teams voice, PBXs, gateways and cloud voice platforms.

Sentinel SBC

Controls the SIP border, applies security policy, supports SIP normalization and helps enforce encrypted voice interconnection.

Mediatrix Gateways

Connect analog and digital telephony to IP voice while supporting secure SIP deployment models.

DGW Software

Provides the configuration, routing and management foundation behind many Mediatrix and Sentinel deployments.

M5 Technologies Expertise

Helps customers design secure SIP, TLS, SRTP and SBC architectures for real business environments.

TLS vs SRTP FAQ

Common questions about secure VoIP.

Do I need both TLS and SRTP?

Yes. TLS protects SIP signalling, while SRTP protects the voice media. For secure VoIP, both are normally required.

Does TLS encrypt the voice conversation?

No. TLS protects signalling. The voice audio is carried by RTP, and SRTP is used to encrypt that media stream.

Can a SBC enforce TLS and SRTP?

A properly configured SBC can help enforce secure SIP policy, TLS handling, SRTP requirements, SIP normalization and topology hiding.

Why choose M5 Technologies and Mediatrix?

M5 Technologies and Mediatrix provide proven SBCs, gateways and software platforms for secure SIP, POTS replacement, Teams voice and critical communications.

Secure VoIP Assessment

Need to validate TLS, SRTP or SBC security?

Ask M5 Technologies to review your SIP trunks, Microsoft Teams Direct Routing, Mediatrix gateway deployment or Sentinel SBC architecture.

  • Review SIP trunk encryption requirements.
  • Validate TLS and SRTP policy.
  • Identify where a Sentinel SBC should sit.
  • Plan secure Mediatrix gateway modernization.
